icons moved outside of fences after win update

windows update issue with fences

Fences 5

I have several PCs with fences 5. On each one, when windows did the last update most of my icons moved outside of their fence. I tried doing a restore desktop and that did not fix the scattered icons.

I believe this is the latest Patch Tuesday update. I have not seen any other reports of this issue with this update, however, sometimes just the update process can mess with things. This is especially true with software that hooks into Windows Explorer.

As is usually the case, Cumulative Updates often include updates to other parts of the system including Windows apps.

My first suggestion would be to first try dragging the shortcuts back into the Fences where they belong, and see if they survive a restart of your computer.

I did what you suggested. And here is what I found.

The few icons that stayed in the fences were actually on my desktop.

The ones that lost their fence was because of something this Win update did in moving some icons to my cloud.

Is this a bug or windows just taking over my pc?

Check your OneDrive settings. Do you have On Demand enabled? I know OneDrive gets updated at the very least weekly, sometimes more often. I'm betting it has something to do with a OneDrive update as opposed to a Windows update.

Again, check your OneDrive settings. Microsoft is really pushing their new Backup App. Check those settings as well.

See if making changes to your OneDrive settings makes any difference with this issue.

well, I must have did something wrong.  I have lost so many files on 2 of my PCs now. Not on the PC and not in the cloud anymore.
